Abstract:
The effective potential for the Lagrangian operator in the 2-d O(N) non-linear σ-model is unbounded below. The relation between the effective potential and the expectation value of the Hamiltonian density is clarfied and it is shown that the stationary point of the former is in fact the minimum energy state.
