Abstract:

We study electromagentic (e.m.) field both inside and outside a plane boundary surface of a homogeneous superconductor. The e.m. response of the conductor is characterized by the London penetration depth M-1=(the effective photon mass within the conductor)-1. Force and energy generated by the e.m. field (both classical and quantized) are calculated. Casimir energy between two parallel conducting plates is examined. Regularization of the vacuum energy is also discussed. It is found that the self-energy of an infinite superconducting plate embodies a definite energy piece, proportional to M3, displaying an attractive surface tension.
