Abstract:
It is shown that Dyson's integral representation for the matrix element of a causal commutator between the vacuum and an arbitrary state is closely related to the transition amplitude in the lowest order of perturbation. This relation is used for clarifying physical meanings of the parameters of integration. The integral representation for the absorptive parts of vertex funcions previously introduced by one of the present authors (K. Y.) comes out as a simple example. It can be applied also for the absorptive parts of scattering amplitudes, in which case, however, such a simple connection with perturbation theory is not obtained as is the case with vertex functions.
