Abstract:
A strong nonlinear conduction behavior in bismuth observed by Esaki is studied. As a natural extension of the Dumke-Haering-Hopfield theory, nonlinear terms arising from deformation potential, pressure tensor of electron gas, continuity equation, and recombination process are taken into account. A nonlinear equation of lattice vibration is set up and solved in terms of elliptic functions. The resultant current-voltage relation is shown to have a kink character consistent with experiment. Some discussions are given of the results of the present theory.
