Spin-Wave Impurity Levels in a Heisenberg Ferromagnet

Abstract:

As an application of the results obtained in a preceding paper, spin-wave impurity levels in a Heisenberg ferromagnet due to a magnetic or a nonmagnetic impurity are studied, which are discrete and detached from the top or the bottom of the spin-wave energy band. The magnetic impurity considered has a spin and an exchange integral different from those in the pure crystal, and the nonmagnetic impurity considered here has no spin and no exchange integral. Actual calculations are performed for an idealized case where the ferromagnet is a primitive simple cubic lattice in which only nearest neighbour spins are coupled. It is shown that under certain conditions a magnetic impurity having a larger spin or a stronger exchange integral than that which exists in the pure crystal gives rise to s-like, p-like and d-like impurity levels above the top of the spin-wave energy band, while the nonmagnetic impurity causes no impurity levels. In the former case the energies of these three types of impurity levels are evaluated numerically.
