Abstract:

The validity of the one-boson-exchange model is discussed in connection with the nucleon-nucleon scattering. From a consideration of the asymptotic behaviour of the phase shifts calculated with this model as the incident energy goes to infinitey, it is shown that an appropriate limitation in energy must be imposed in order that the theory does not present contradiction with the Levinson theorem. A practical limit of applicability of the model is effectively established in terms of the impact parameter whose critical value is fixed to be 0.4 ∼0.6 \hbar/µπc; for those values of the impact parameter smaller than this, the theory does not work. An alternate estimate of the critical value is given in terms of the ranges of the forces due to the exchange of each boson, showing a reasonable agreement with the former value. A discussion concerning the inclusion of other bosons not yet discovered is also given.
