Abstract:

The effect of final state interaction is examined in detail in the (α, 2α) reactions at intermediate energies of an incident α particle. First, the angular correlation distribution is calculated by employing the plane-wave cutoff Born approximation. It is found impossible to explain the angular correlation distributions of the O16(α, 2α)C12 (ground state) and C12(α, 2α)Be8 (ground state) reactions by this simple treatment. Next, the angular correlation distribution in the cutoff Born approximation is improved in such a way that the effect of the final state interaction is correctly taken into account through the empirical phase shift of α-α scattering. The result of calculation is compared with the experimental data. It is shown that the experimental angular correlation distributions of the O16(α, 2α)C12 (ground state), C12(α, 2α)Be8 (ground state) and Be9(α, 2α)He5 (ground state) reactions can be well reproduced by the improved treatment. It is concluded that the final state interaction plays an essential role in the angular correlation distribution of the (α, 2α) reactions for light nuclei. The relation between the impulse approximation and our formalism is briefly discussed.
