Abstract:

Uncorrelated 2π-exchange contributions to the nucleon-nucleon scattering are investigated in detail by comparing the “proper” 2π contributions with appropriate one-boson-exchange amplitudes.
It is shown that (i) the iso-spin non-flip amplitude shows a behaviour similar to the contribution from the exchange of a singel (iso-scalar) scalar boson, mainly owing to the effect of the (33) resonance; (ii) the behaviour of the iso-spin flip amplitude is also very similar to that of the contribution from the exchange of a single (iso-vector) vector boson, and the contribution from the nucleon-pole term is dominant in this amplitude.
Furthermore, the relation of our approach to the potential model is discussed, and we show that the two-pion-exchange process produces a strong attractive central force and a rather strong negative LS force. The LS force gives a splitting of the 3PJ amplitudes roughly equal to the observed one. However, the central force seems too strong.
The case when we cut off the high momentum part of the contribution of the exchanged two pions is also examined. By the cutoff procedure, the contribution from the 33 part is considerably suppressed, and the suppression becomes larger as the orbital angular momentum of the two nucleons becomes smaller.
