Abstract:

It is shown that the inside repulsive core of the α-α interaction appearing in the effective potential description at low energies, turns strongly absorptive at very high energies. The impulse approximation is used to construct an α-α optical potential at high energies from two-nucleon scattering amplitudes. By comparison with the elastic scattering data at 915 MeV, the qualitative properties of the α-α optical potential thus derived are confirmed as reliable. Also, it is shown that the effects of target exchange terms give no essential modification to this potential.
