Abstract:

Quantization of the radiation field in Lorentz gauge is reexamined and it is shown that without using indefinite metric a consistent formulation is possible. Though it is not necessary to modify the usual supplementary condition, we should abandon to regard a vector potential Aµ(x) as a Hermitian operator. It is suggested that the results of physical interests, however, are the same as those obtained from the ordinary formulation.
