Abstract:
A general expression has been derived from a statistical model, which takes account of the onservation of angular momentum, in addition to energy and linear momentum, for the initial non-equilibrium distribution of vibrational-rotational populations of the diatomic species AB resulting from the molecular splitting: [ABCD]→AB+C+D. Numerical calculations of the expression under a reasonable assumption make it possible to know, for instance, the rotational population distribution of AB. The nonthermal distribution curve obtained varies considerably with the masses of the four atoms, the moment of inertia AB, and the spatial volume of the intermediate complex.
