Abstract:

The Nambu-Salpeter-Bethe equation (the so-called Bethe-Salpeter equation) in the pion-ladder approximation is solved numerically for the P- and D-wave states of nucleon-nucleon scattering. Further we neglect the negative energy contribution (pair effect).
According to the magnitude of the difference between Born phase shifts and ours, our results are classified to four types. The magnitude is qualitatively governed by three factors and this classification indicates the difference between our calculations and the 3-dimensional or the dispersion theoretic results.
Two bound states of the nucleon-nucleon system appear in the 3P0 state in our calculation, but we find no bound state in this state by calculation of dispersion theory. This difference shows the contribution from the left-hand cut due to the many-particle exchange of the ladder type. On the other hand, we see the quantitative differences with the 3-dimensional calculation in the 3D2 and 1P1 states. These differences are due to the retardation effect.
