Abstract:

In a previous paper, the excitation spectrum in liquid helium II at 0°K has been studied from first principles, by taking into account the contribution from the phonon-phonon interactions, where use has been made of a simple square-well potential as an attraction potential between helium atoms. In the present note, the calculation of the excitation energy is improved by making use of the Morse potential which is more realistic than the square-well potential. The result is in better harmony with the experimental spectrum than that of the previous paper. In the final section, the lowest order ground state energy is calculated numerically to yield a value which is in fairly good agreement with the observed value.
