Abstract:

Phenomenological consequences of Arnold and Barnett's shielding-cut (ABSC) mechanism are investigated. Under the assumption of an effective normal-Regge trajectory of exchange-degeneracy breaking, the presently available data on p-p diffraction scattering at high energies are analysed by the use of the fixed simple-pole Pomeron (FSPP) with and without ABSC mechanism. First, the presently existing data on the total cross section can be successfully explained by FSPP without ABSC mechanism and also by FSPP with two ABSC αC(t) = 1 - mπ2 + t/4 and αC(t) = 1 - mK2 + t/4, but do not seem to be satisfactorily fitted by FSPP with an ABSC αC(t) alone. Secondly, that data on the real to imaginary ratio of the forward also by FSPP with two ABSC αC and \tildeαC, but do not seem to be consistently explained by FSPP with an ABSC αC alone. Thirdly, FSPP with two ABSC αC and \tildeαC can give a fully successful explanation of all the existing data on the slope parameter of the elastic peak without the aid of normal-Reggeon contribution. This best fit is obtained by the use of the only one adjustable parameter. But, either FSPP without ABSC or ESPP with an ABSC αC does not seem to give a consistent fitting to the presently available data on the slope. On the basis of these observations, it is argued that the presently available data on p-p diffraction scattering seem to prefer FSPP with two ABSC αC and \tildeαC rather than FSPP without ABSC and FSPP with an ABSC αC alone.
