Abstract:

The total cross section for the elastic scattering of neutrons by 12C up to En = 4.4 MeV is calculated by the coupled channel method. A coupling form factor is constructed from a microscopic wave function of 12C and a realistic two-body interaction between the incident neutron and a nucleon of the target. The renormalization of the interaction strength is found to be necessary, which is discussed in connection with antisymmetrization effects. To examine the validity of the model for other experimental data, the energies of the two positive parity bound states of 13C and the phase shifts for elastic proton scattering up to Ep = 7.8 MeV are also calculated.
