Abstract:
Time evolution of nonlinearly modulated waves in one-dimensional diatomic anharmonic lattice is considered. Using the perturbation method established by Taniuti and Yajima, we derive equations to determine how the slowly varying parts of the modulated wave behave in the lowest order of asymptotic expansion. One interesting result is that even the modulated wave of the optical mode brings about one more slowly varying wave in the same order as the envelope ones, and this wave has a great influence on the modulational instabilities of plane waves.
