Abstract:

The nucleus-nucleus interaction is microscopically investigated by using the resonating group method with a special attention to exchange effects due to the Pauli principle. The resonating group kernel is expanded in the number of nucleons exchanged among the two nuclei through the antisymmetrization operation. On the basis of an analysis of α-α, α-16O and 16O-16O interactions, we show that the exchange effects play a characteristic role in three (inner, intermediate and outer) regions of the interaction between the two nuclei. In particular, the interaction in the intermediate region is found to be shallower than the direct potential. The applicability of the orthogonality condition model is also examined.
