Abstract:

The electromagnetic form factors of the proton at asymptotically large space-like momentum transfers are studied on the basis of usual relativistic field theory. On the assumption of convergence of the Low equation, we obtain the asymptotic sum rules which relate the form factors to the real part of the on-mass-shell proton-proton elastic scattering amplitudes. The rough evaluation of the sum rules for the 4-momentum transfer squared t up to ∼ -700 GeV2 is made with the information of high energy scattering experiments at the ISR. The usual “dipole” behavior of the form factors has not been expected. Some interesting features of the asymptotic behavior of form factors have emerged.
