Vector Field with a Bare Mass and the Higgs Mechanism

Abstract:

Abelian gauge theories with a non-zero bare mass are investigated in the framework of indefinite-metric quantum field theory. It is shown in the pre-Higgs model that the Goldstone boson is a physical particle but at the Higgs limit it is not smoothly related to that of the Higgs model. This conclusion remains true even if spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs dynamically, and is confirmed by analyzing the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the chain approximation.
