Abstract:

Structure of both positive- and negative-parity states in 12C is studied with a microscopic 3 α-particle model. The c.m. motions of 3 α-clusters are treated by the generator coordinate method. All the levels with T=0 below 15 MeV (except the 12.7 MeV 1+ level) are successfully reproduced, including the famous 02+ level and the next positive-parity level which is regarded as 22+. Another 2+, 31+ and two 4+ states which have a structure quite similar to that of the 02+ and 22+ states are predicted with large K-mixings. Furthermore the present investigation predicts an existence of 03+ state. The structure of all the above excited positive-parity states is quite different from that expected in the shell model, but rather should be considered that of a finite α-boson gas. The negative-parity levels are quite well described as members of the Kπ = 3- and 1- bands in the present model.
