Abstract:

A statistical-mechanical theory for the order-parameter expansion of free energy, whose expansion coefficients are expressed in terms of cumulant averages of microscopic random variables, is presented in the mean field approximation. The theory can easily be extended to the cases of the complex order-parameter as well as the three-dimensional one. As applications of present theory, the order of phase transitions is investigated on simple order-disorder models with one-dimensional order-parameter and on a polyorientational phase transition of dipolar system with three-dimensional order-parameter.
