Abstract:

The age-old problem of the electron-muon mass ratio is discussed. Starting with a gauge theory which respects electron-muon universality the small electron-muon mass ratio is derived as a consequence of a spontaneous symmetry breakdown. Contrary to various models so far proposed only one extra neutral scalar field is introduced to realize this problem.
This model is further extended so as to include the heavy lepton in the game in addition to the electron and muon by introducing three extra neutral scalar fields.
