High Transverse Momentum of Atmospheric γ-Ray Bundles (> 1012 eV) Estimated from Their RE Distributions

Abstract:
The superposed RE distributions of atmospheric γ-ray or hadron bundles are theoretically derived from the distribution of transverse momentum and of production height with a factor due to energy loss. From the experimental data of γ-ray bundles (Eγ ≥0.5 TeV) at Mt. Norikura we estimate the mean transverse momentum at interaction energies 50 ∼200 TeV in comparison with our theoretical formulae. The result is given as <PT >= 2.7+ 2.4- 1.0 GeV/c for “fireball” as a cluster of the most forward several (n ≈6) secondaries and <pT >= 0.63+ 0.60- 0.15 GeV/c for individual secondaries with respect to the collision axis, if the “fireballs” and a leading particle have nearly equal PT values. Compared with the other results for individual secondaries at lower energies, the present result suggests an obvious increase of the mean pT value with incident energies.
