Pion Condensed State in Nuclear Matter

Abstract:
The ground state structure of pion condensed nuclear matter is investigated in detail from the viewpoint that the pion condensation can be regarded as the appearence of static spin-isospin density wave (SIDW) or spin density wave (SDW) due to the attractive nature of OPEP. The problem is formulated as a one-body problem for a nucleon in a periodic mean field, the amplitude of which is taken as the order parameter characterizing the phase transition (self-consistent band theory…SCB). By means of SCB, the mechanism of the phase transition is shown as a second order phase transition and the characteristic features of the new ground state are obtained. It is found that in a course of the phase transition the nucleon system undergoes a drastic change in its structure, characterized particularly by the giant SIDW (SDW) and the strongly deformed Fermi sufrace.
