Quark Confinement by Half-Instanton Gas

Abstract:
Assuming parallelism between the O(3) non-Linear σ model in 2 dimensions and non-abelian gauge models in 4 dimensions, we derive constraints on the number of the species of quarks for quark confinement to be realized. We also clarify the mechanisms which determine the dependence of the string tension on the coupling constant.
