Abstract:

Generalized Kaluza's high-dimensional theory is formulated in a generally covariant and quantum theoretical way. It gives a clue to make the spontaneous dimensional reduction possible by realizing the non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of the 4-dimensional space-time field characteristic of Kaluza's theory. The gravitational constant and the gauge coupling constant are also generated through the vacuum expectation values of the metric tensor field. Fundamental particles with the internal structure are consistently described in this framework in the form satisfying the local SO(3 + n, 1) transformation invariance as well as the (4 + n)-dimensional general coordinate transformation invariance.
