A Characterization of the Detailed Balance from a Viewpoint of the Onsager-Machlup Theory

Abstract:
For the so-called system size expansion model ∂p(t, y) /
∂t = ε-1 \intdr[w(y-εr, r)p(t, y-εr)-w(y, r)p(t, y)](ε↓0), we obtain the circulation of the probability currents by using the Onsager-Machlup theory. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the detailed balance to hold: detailed balance ⇔ circulation≡0 ⇔ probabilities of clockwise and counterclockwise motions agree with each other. It is also shown circulation≡0 ⇒ time reversibility of the most probable path.
