Abstract:

In the charged-pion condensed phase, the pion-induced β-decay of baryons is allowed. For this process formulae are derived in order to calculate the cooling rate of neutron stars realistically by using the formalism developed earlier, where the effects of Δ-isobars, baryon-baryon short-range correlations and p-wave form factors in the pion-baryon vertex are included. Particular attention is paid to clarifying the characteristic roles of these effects on the matrix elements of the β-decay process; they are included not only in the strong interaction process but also in the weak interaction process in a consistent way. Moreover a typical numerical result of the neutrino emissivity is given for the weak condensate. It is shown that our result is about one tenth of that given by Maxwell et al., who used a simple model for pion condensation.
