Abstract:
The Kaluza-Klein theory is known as an interesting approach to the unified of gauge fields and the gravitational field based on a higher-dimensional spacetime geometry. In such a theory, however, the mass scale arising from the excitation of the extra space is restricted to the order of Planck mass. In the present paper, we investigate the Kaluza-Klein theory from the viewpoint of the induced gravity ; that is, the theory of gravity defined as a quantum fluctuation of fundamental matter fields. We show that the problem of the Planck mass can be overcome by considering the cutoff of ultraviolet divergence out of the extra dimensional space.
