Abstract:

The relationship is studied between two microscopic models, the Sp(6,R) and the multi-cluster model, both of which select specific physically relevant core excitations from a huge space of shell model states. Overlaps of a few low symplectic excitations with 3α- and 2α+16O-cluster states of the same SU(3) symmetry are used to show that the two models are complementary and that a unified treatment coupling several symplectic bands and cluster states may be needed for a satisfactory description of the structure of light nuclei.
