Abstract:

On the basis of the Alternating-Layer-Spin model and by solving the Hartree-Fock equation with an effective interaction, the π0 condensation in hot and dense symmetric nuclear matter is investigated. The onset density is found to increase remarkably with the temperature. Aspects characteristic of the phase transition into the π0-condensed state, such as release of latent heat, sudden decrease of internal energy and significant softening of the equation of state, are noted. The possibility to achieve the π0-condensed phase through energetic nuclear collisions is also discussed in a simple compression model.
