Gauge hierarchies of a system are investigated in which the heavy (mφ ≃mGUT) Higgs scalar field φ(x) interacts with the gauge fields of the usual SU(2)W ×U(1)Y. Parameters of the Higgs potential modified by the one-loop correction of the gauge fields are examined so as to realize a potential desirable for generating gauge hierarchies, and therewith the effective action for the gauge fields (zµ, wµ± and Aµ) is calculated in an approximate but analytic form by integrating all the quantum effects of the Higgs field.
It is shown that the weak gauge bosons, zµ and wµ±, acquire in fact the hierarchically small masses generated by non-perturbative quantum effects of the Higgs field under the Higgs potential obtained, while the photon Aµ is left massless.
