Abstract:

To have an insight into the interaction between confined quark systems with surrounding pion fields, we study a schematic model exactly solvable from the chiral bag viewpoint, where two layers composed of u, d quarks with a specific spin-flavor order are placed parallel with each other and the chiral fields (σ, π0) described in the σ-model exist between two layers and outside them. As two layers approach closely, the chiral angles between and outside the layers change drastically from those for the isolated situation, mainly due to the axial-vector current conservation. Noticeable attractive (repulsive) effects appear when the relative spin-flavor orientation of two layers is opposite (same) and the chiral angles are symmetric (antisymmetric) about the center of the system. Close approach of two layers with the most favorable spin-flavor combination results in the total energy gain of the order of several tens MeV per baryon, compared with the distant limit. These aspects indicate essentially nonperturbative nature of the interaction between chiral layers. Effects from change of quark spin-flavor coherence, comparison with a perturbative treatment and so forth are also discussed.
