(Received June 2, 1988)
Abstract:
We condsider the world-sheet action for the string (and higher extended
objects) induced in the underlying field theory. In general, the action
involves the intrinsic and the extrinsic curvature terms as well as the
actions for the induced gauge fields and the matter fields.

- Our conventions of suffices are: (normal suffix)=0,1,...,n-1; (underlined suffix)=n...,N-1; (bold-faced suffixs)=0, 1, ..., N-1; (Greek suffix)=(general coordinate index); (Latin suffix)=(local Lorentz index). The index with “[” and that with “]” are antisymmetrized. The indices after comma “,” indicate differentiation with respect to the corresponding component of the coordinate variable.

- We define ek µ by ekµejµ=δjk, e by e=det ekµ, gµν=eiµejνηij, and gµν by gµν=eiµejν ηij. ηij=ηij=diag(1,-1,...,-1). The Greek (Latin) indices are uppered and lowered by the g's(η's), and mutually converted by the e's.
