BRST Symmetry in String and Membrane Theories

Abstract:

The two-dimensional gravity is believed to impose a severe constraint on the allowed central charge c of the coupled matter system or on the target space dimensions D ≤1 in the context of non-cricital string theory. Recently, there appeared several attempts to overcome this stricture. We here comment on some of these attempts, namely, the Weyl gauge fixing, R = -constant, and the ε-expansion scheme in d = 2 + ε. As for the Weyl gauge fixing, the BRST symmetric treatment is reviewed. In connection with the ε-expansion in d = 2 + ε, the membrane theory, which formally corresponds to ε= 1, is discussed, and quite different constraints on the critical dimensions at d = 2 and d = 3 are noted.
