Luminescence of Localized Excitons and Exciton Induced Luminescence in Alkali Halides

Abstract:

Two experiments were carried out concerning excitons in KI. Luminescences from localized I- ions in KBr/KI mixed crystals were measured (Part I). They suffer from Stokes shift and are observed even in the case of concentration of 8.5 ×10-1 mol of KI in KBr. At the same time, energies of localized excitons around I- ions are transferred to some impurities in cases of such high concentrations of I- ions. In Part II, exciton induced luminescences from Tl+ ions in KI/TlI are described. Their yields are almost independent of concentrations of Tl+ ions, which fact suggests the migration of excitons in KI. The induced luminescence shows temperature-dependence. The natures of the exciton are discussed on the basis of these results.
