Heavy-Ion Fusion Reactions as Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling

Abstract:

Nuclear intrinsic degrees of freedom strongly enhance the fusion cross section in heavy-ion collisions at energies below the Coulomb barrier. We discuss the characteristics of this phenomenon from the points of view of macroscopic quantum tunneling.
