Calculation of Cascade Functions for the Emulsion Chamber Project

Jun Nishimura

Institute for Nuclear Study, University of Tokyo, Tokyo

Abstract:

Transition curves and lateral distributions of cascade showers in the emulsion chamber are calculated in order to apply to the energy measurement of electron showers observed in the emulsion chambers exposed at balloon altitudes and at the mountain laboratories, Norikura and Chacaltaya. The calculation is based on an analytic solution of the three dimensional shower theory, in a similar way as that made by Kidd and author, for ICEF (International Collaboration of Emulsion Flight).
Numerical calculations are made for electron-pair-primary cascade showers and not for γ-ray initiated showers. By assuming an electron pair primary one is able to eliminate effects from the fluctuation in the location of the first materialization process of γ-ray in the chamber.
It is necessary to estimate several correction factors for applying the results to the energy determination of the shower observed in the emultion chamber, such as the effects coming from inhomogeneous structure of the chamber, composed of layers of lead and emulsion plates.
