Abstract:

Considerable part in the interpretation of pion-nucleon reactions can be made independently of the details of meson field theory. The present paper pion-nucleon interactions. In §1 a historical survey on this way of approach is given for the purpose of elucidating a trend of activities in Japan. In §2 both the angular distributions of pions and the polarizations of recoil nucleons are calculated for pion-nucleon scattering and photon-pion production. These are a summary of a series of our papers, but a way of presentation is so modified as to be suitable to a review article. §3 is based on a paper by two of us (M. K. and S. M.) in which the relations between the above two reactions were investigated by using the unitarity of the S-matrix. §4 is devoted to the discussions on the possible violence of the charge independence expected at low energies. Although the effects of charge dependent interactions are small, except for the Coulomb interference, our estimates may facilitate the analysis of more accurate experiments.
