Breaking the Vacuum Degeneracy of the Superstring

Abstract:
We present a general method for calculating the energy splitting of gauge field vacua to the one-loop level on compact, multiply connected manifolds. Two explicit examples are given in which non-zero gauge vacua have the lowest energy, and the gauge group is spontaneously broken.
