Subnuclear Degrees of Freedom in Electromagnetic Interactions

Abstract:
The role of subnuclear degrees of freedom in electromagnetic break-up reactions on the deuteron is reviewed. The controversial issue concerning the electromagnetic form factors for the meson exchange current is analysed in detail for d(e, e')pn near threshold, and the necessity of a consistent relativistic treatment is stressed. Δ degrees of freedom can be studied in deuteron photodisintegration. This process depends sensitively on the NΔ interaction in the Δ excitation region. Finally the relativistic spin-orbit current and meson retardation effects in meson mediated interactions and currents and their influence on deuteron photodisintegration is discussed.
