A New Scheme of Spatio-Temporal Chaos Created by the Interaction between the Phase Waves and the Topoligical Defects

Abstract:

We propose a new scheme for the spatio-temporal chaos based on the recent experiments of the authors in electrohydrodynamic convection of a nematic liquid crystal. In this scheme, the phase of temporal oscillation couples with the phase of spatial periodicity and defects are produced in the regular convection structure. This scheme is different from the `phase turbulence'-`defect turbulence' scheme, as it has an underlying spatial structure, and different from the `traveling wave-defect turbulence' because the structure is not drifting with the waves in this case.
