Abstract:

The requirement that generators of local Lorentz transformations of vector fields should exist demands introduction of operators which do not commute with these fields. An analysis shows that electrodynamics in its quantized form contains these generators. They are principally based on the vector potentials. Thus field quantization can be understood as following from geometrical considerations, and the potentials are shifted from an auxiliary to a leading role.
